In
1983, Wayne Long and his family returned to America for a year’s
furlough and Wayne served as interim Missions Professor at Northwest
Christian College in Eugene, OR. While doing research, he
discovered the large Portuguese-speaking populations on the east coast
of the United States. Mr. Long met with other church leaders and
founded the Hisportic Christian Mission to reach Portuguese-speaking
peoples in the United States and the world. The family moved to
Rhode Island as a central location to reach the people group identified
from Lowell, MA to New Jersey. The Mission was founded in 1984
and has started or affiliated 43 Portuguese-speaking churches along the
east coast. The churches are principally Brazilian congregations
with Brazilian pastors and are located from Nashua, New Hampshire to
Orlando, Florida, plus Brazil and Guinea Bissau Africa. The
vision of the Board of Directors and the staff of the Hisportic
Christian Mission is to place a church in every Hisportic
(Portuguese-speaking) area in the United States. The Mission
seeks partnerships with other church-planting organizations,
congregations and individuals who want to reach out to the Hisportic
people group.
Wayne
Long currently resides in East Providence, Rhode Island and is married
to Gail Long who works as the Executive Assistant at Cox
Communications. They have two sons: Nelson Long who is married
and lives in West Lake Village, CA and Nathan Long of Burbank, CA.
